Local Barber Opens Permanent Place, Gives Back to Community

The popular mobile barbershop Dapper has been joined by a second, permanent location. Dapper Westside, owned by Mandy Glasscock, opened its doors in Tyler in early October.

Although the original plan was brick and mortar, Glasscock launched a mobile business in 2018.

“Brick and Mortar was my original plan and design for Dapper 16 years ago when I first had the idea, but I decided to create a mobile store first because I had never heard of it,” she said. “I saw a need for quality places for men and boys where the staff is well trained and where the bar is set very high for great customer service and great hair.”

Glasscock, who was born and raised in Tyler, said she was thrilled to see the brick and mortar ready and working.

“I love our community and my business is another way to benefit our city. I was born and raised in Tyler and I saw and still see the need to bring service back to the forefront of the business,” she said. “At Dapper Westside, everything is relative. Our clients are not just another deal, they are people we appreciate and hope they leave with the same feeling.”

The store offers men’s and boys’ haircuts, beard trims, straight razor shaves, and relaxing additions to a trendy setting with graffiti on the walls and contemporary music.

Glasscock wanted the store to be colorful and fun, and designed it herself with her husband.

“The store itself is pretty cool. This is my design and my husband Jason and I built and remodeled almost everything ourselves,” she said. “Dapper Westside is an interesting place, unique in every way.”

“We have even more plans for the future,” Glasscock added.

However, not only the atmosphere makes the store unique. Glasscock said she has a strict hiring process.

“My recruiting and training system is out of the norm,” she said. “There are several interviews, including a short interview, so I can assess what level the stylist is at with his skill.”

“It’s a long process, but I want my clients to have the best possible experience and keep costs down,” said Glasscock.

Glasscock is also passionate about her community.

If time and resources permit, Glasscock will take his Dapper mobile and cut hair for the homeless under the bridge for free. Something she hopes to do once Dapper Westside is fully staffed.

“When I was a child, my church gave clothes and food to the needy. I remember thinking in my childhood brain that they need haircuts to get a job. Back then, of course, I couldn’t help it, but many years later I became a hairdresser and now I can bring my mobile store directly to the homeless, ”she said. “My husband and I take the Dapper mobile under the bridge as often as we can and I cut my hair until no one needs it.”

Until she can get back under the bridge, Glasscock helps her in other ways. Dapper Westside recently put together new toys for families in need.

“We wanted to help bring smiles to the faces of children, to help parents who do not have the means to buy gifts for their children this year, but they really want it,” she said.

Glasscock said her faith plays a big role in the comeback and she hopes to do more in the future.

“Life is hard, it can knock you down quickly and that’s why people need help. My faith is a big part of why I feel it’s important to give. Jesus was the greatest giver of all time, I am nothing like him, but I aspire to be,” she said. “My husband Jason and I try to give back in different ways and the Lord will give this new business a success so we can give more.”

Dapper Westside is also involved with For The Silent, a local charity that helps raise awareness and fight human trafficking.

While Dapper mobile still exists, Glasscock said she looks forward to meeting new customers at the permanent office.

“Come to me or my employees, we will be glad to meet you,” she said.
