LSA Burger and GDAC accept artist submissions for annual wall project

Six local artists can receive $1,000 and the opportunity to have their work featured on a mural at the LSA Burger Co. starting in April.

Launched in partnership with the Greater Denton Arts Council, the annual art project is inviting artists from Dallas and Fort Worth to apply to paint a new mural on the LSA Rooftop Terrace over the weekend of April 21st. A jury will select six artists from among those submitted, each having 48 hours to complete their piece of mural, which will remain in place for one year to highlight the artists’ work.

It’s also a chance for local artists to connect with the local community in a unique way,” says Crete Enciso, president of Radical Hospitality Group, which owns and operates LSA.

“We’re serving food in the midst of an art show and some of our artists have let the kids paint the stars on the galaxy or invite families to help paint, so it becomes an amazing interactive experience,” said Enciso. “As the time goes by, you see the artists helping each other too – it’s really amazing.”

Artists are free to create whatever they want for their mural as long as it suits the family. A seventh artist has also been selected to mural at the Patterson-Appleton Art Center as part of the annual LSA-GDAC partnership event. It was successful if you ask Georgina Ngozi, GDAC Executive Director.

“It makes visible the organizations that are involved, but also gives artists a platform to showcase their work,” Ngozi said. “It’s for a year, which is pretty important, and it’s being viewed by the people who use the space, who dine there, so it also serves an inspirational purpose.”

Selected artists will receive a materials stipend and $1,000 compensation for their work. They will also be invited to meet the artists at the GDAC on the evening of April 20th and the LSA Artists’ Celebration on the evening of April 23rd.

Applicants can submit proposals at lsaburger.com/2023-muralist-application by February 10 in the style they hope to include in the mural.

“This is by far the coolest thing we do,” Enciso said.
