Man who shot his own mother and her fiancé to be tried again

Stephen Burks is the brother of Delano Burks, who was found dead in the Houston Ship Canal about two weeks after he went missing.

HOUSTON. The man accused of shooting his mother multiple times and killing her fiancé is due back in court on Monday.

Stephen Burks, 27, has been charged with murder and aggravated assault, according to court documents.

Stephen Burks shot and killed his mother Karen Jeffley and her fiancé Santiago Wesley early Friday morning in a west Houston home, investigators said. Jeffley is still recovering from the shooting.

“Sometimes the stress of life…which she felt influenced the actions…created a very tragic situation in their home. I visited Karen. concern,” said Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee.

Jeffley called 911 after she was shot. She told the police that she had been shot and needed help. When the police got to the house, they found Wesley unresponsive in the yard. Jeffrey was found hiding in the living room.

Officers later found Stephen Burks sitting outside on the house’s patio. He was taken into custody and charged.

“Our suspect had a history of mental health problems,” said Police Lieutenant R. Wilkins. They thought he was acting strange today. Somehow he got hold of a gun.”

It is not clear what the motives for the shooting were. Stephen Burks is being held in jail on $500,000 bail on each charge.
