Mayor of Washington, Iowa charged with sexual assault


The mayor of Washington, Iowa, turned himself in to Washington County law enforcement this afternoon after he was charged with sexual assault.

According to the criminal complaint, an Iowa Criminal Investigation Division agent questioned a 27-year-old man on Wednesday, Jan. 11. The interview followed a report given by an unnamed man to a Washington Police Department official earlier in the day.

The alleged victim reported that Jaron Rosien, the mayor of Washington, approached him about playing at JP’s 207 bar in Washington before closing on Sunday morning, January 8th. The man claims to have been the victim of unwanted and inappropriate touching. from Rosien.

The next day, Thursday, January 12, a search warrant was executed in Iowa to search surveillance footage at JP’s 207, which is a restaurant, bar, and concert hall owned by Rosien. The criminal complaint against Rosien states that sightings show that “at around 1:39 a.m., it appears that the person believed to be Rosien is near the person believed to be (the victim).” It goes on to say that CCTV footage shows multiple instances of sexual contact between Rosien and the alleged victim.

Iowa CID agents also questioned Rosen on January 12. He confirmed that he was in JP 207 on the night of 7/8 January and “confessed to being flirtatious with a person matching the (alleged victim’s) physical description.” Rosien did not acknowledge or deny the inappropriate contact. The complaint states that he “rather stated that due to his own level of intoxication, (he) could not remember.”

Jaron Rosien, 38, was charged with third-degree sexual assault, a Class C felony. He was sworn in as mayor of Washington in 2018 and ran unsuccessfully for the Iowa House of Representatives in June 2022, losing the Republican primary. He has owned JP’s 207 in Washington since 2012.

Rosien’s statement, released late tonight, said: “I take these allegations very seriously. I also take this job, its responsibilities, and those who rely on me to carry them out very seriously. a formal role to focus on what is required. At this time, I think and want to thank my family, friends and the community for their support.”
