Migrant shelter in Juarez receives UN doctors

Kiki Romero’s Gym Makes Room For Migrant Medical Workers After OIM’s ‘Filtration’ Hotel Closes

EL PASO, TX (border report) – Doctors affiliated with the UN International Organization for Migration will provide free medical services seven days a week at one of the largest migrant shelters in Juarez.

According to Santiago González Reyes, head of the city’s Office of Human Rights, Juarez City staff are already setting up examination rooms and office space for doctors at Kiki Romero’s gym.

“We were built gradually thanks to the support of citizens and public organizations. We already have an examination table, medical equipment and medicines so that doctors can provide quality services to migrants,” Gonzalez said.

OIM doctors will be at the shelter during the afternoons of Monday through Sunday.

The doctors were previously based at the old Flamingo Hotel in north Juarez, which served as a “filter” or quarantine facility for newly arrived migrants during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Filter Hotel closed on December 31 after providing medical services to more than 3,600 migrants for two and a half years.

Given the large number of migrants from all over the world waiting in Juarez to enter the United States, local authorities and the OIM worked out an agreement whereby 11 doctors and registered nurses could stay and visit the shelters regularly.

Kiki Romero, named after legendary sports promoter Juarez and basketball coach, received 180 migrants on Tuesday and was 90 percent full, Gonzalez said.

A city official said long-term migrants are often transferred to the federal government’s larger Leon Vicario shelter.
