Murder suspect being treated for self-inflicted gunshot wound after stalking

BRAZOS COUNTY, Texas (KBTX) — A Brazos County man wanted for the murder of his girlfriend in Bastrop County was chased by law enforcement from Bryan to the Navasota city limits Wednesday before a car crashed on Highway 6.

Highway traffic was completely halted for nearly two hours after the chase ended on the Brazos County riverbank within Navasota city limits.

The driver has been identified as 22-year-old Raul Anthony Caballero, who is accused of shooting and killing his 19-year-old girlfriend Sophia Vera, according to Fox 7 in Austin, which received information from the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office. Her body was found on December 30 on a road in Bastrop County, where part of her family lives.

The couple resided in Brazos County and Caballero was in Vera’s Nissan Altima when he was taken into custody, Fox 7 reported.

According to the Bryan Police Department, the pursuit began shortly before 1:00 p.m. near Highway 6 and Harvey Mitchell Parkway in Bryan. The chase continued south on Highway 6 through College Station and ended just before 1:30 p.m. when Caballero crashed near the intersection of Highway 6 and Robert Road.

Navasota police say minutes later a SWAT team contacted Caballero, who was unconscious from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was taken to the district hospital for treatment by medical helicopter.

Navasota police say that during the chase, Caballero collided with a Chevrolet SUV on Highway 6. According to police, the driver of the SUV was not injured. The Texas Department of Public Safety is investigating the crash. The car was then hit by a patrol unit, causing it to crash into the median between the highway and the railroad tracks.

Sections of Highway 6 were reopened to traffic just after 3:00 pm.

KBTX contacted the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office for more information about the murder investigation.

Along with Bryan’s police, several agencies were involved in the high-speed chase, including the DPS, the Brazos County Sheriff’s Office, the College Station Police Department, the Navasota Police, and the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office.
