North Little Rock Police named Joseph Smith from Little Rock, like the man found dead in the house last week after a morning run-in with the police.
Smith, 39, barricaded himself in a house with another man in the 4700 block of N. Locust Street in North Little Rock on Jan. 18. After the police responded, Smith opened fire inside the house and, in an attempt to escape, raised his weapon on the officer who shot him. The other person who was inside got away safely.
Smith retired to the residence and was later found dead. Police said they do not know if Smith died from a police gunshot or if he died from a self-inflicted wound.
Hip-hop music news site Hip Hop DX reported on Saturday that an Arkansas rapper was killed in the incident. Coca Kazi whose full name is Joseph Serial Smith. Coca-Kazi was born in Little Rock and grew up in Camden before moving to Atlanta where he eventually signed a production contract with a Grammy Award-winning producer. A report from the Hip-Hop Since 1987 news site included a chaotic Facebook Live video that appeared to be filmed inside the house during Smith’s confrontation with police.
The employee involved in the incident was placed on administrative leave in accordance with agency policy.
