North Little Rock police identify suspect in Wednesday’s deadly standoff

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas. North Little Rock Police Department officials identified a suspect in a confrontation with officers last week.

Authorities have identified Joseph Smith, 39, as a suspect in a confrontation with police on Wednesday.

On January 18, police responded to the 4700 block of North Locust Street shortly before 2:00 a.m. in connection with a violation of the order with the use of weapons. When the officers arrived, they said they found Smith barricaded in his house with a gun.

Officials from the NLRPD and special operations units set up a perimeter around the scene to contact Smith. Police said Smith then fired from inside the house.

Police said Smith tried to leave his home by pointing a firearm at the officers. This caused one NLRPD to fire a pistol at Smith, forcing him to retreat inside the house.

Police said members of the SWAT NLRPD team then entered the house and found Smith dead. NLRPD officials said it is unknown if Smith was killed by police or committed suicide.

NLRPD officials said the investigation is still ongoing and that more information will be released when it becomes available.
