Overturned 18-wheeler caught fire at 410 San Antonio loop, one person killed

A major accident near I-35 South and Binz-Engleman Road caused traffic to be delayed.

An overturned 18-wheeler claimed the life of one person after it caught fire on the 410 Northeast Loop and Interstate 35 near Binz Engleman Road on Thursday afternoon, Jan. 5. San Antonio Police Department. As a result of the accident, the southbound 410 Beltway exit was closed on southbound I-35.

The incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. at the 410 Beltway exit near I-35 and Binz-Engleman Road. SAPD said the 18-wheeler lost control, rolled over on its side and caught fire. Police in the area witnessed the accident and responded within minutes.

Officials helped the driver of the 18-wheel truck get out of the car. The driver received minor injuries. However, San Antonio police said the occupant of the 18-wheeler did not get out. Authorities are working to evacuate the passenger,” police said in a statement. Officials did not release details about the passenger or how the 18-wheeler lost control.

SAPD said exits 410 southbound on I-35 south would be closed for several hours, as well as the access road to I-35 and Binz-Engleman Road.

The San Antonio Police Department is asking drivers to take a different route if possible. Traffic will be stopped as crews work to clear the scene.

“Now we are working tirelessly to get it in order,” said San Antonio Police Information Officer Nick Soliz. “He’s still very dangerous and very active.”
