Patrick Mahomes becomes part owner of Kansas City Current

Whitehouse High School alumnus and current Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will join the Kansas City Current owners’ group, the club announced Tuesday morning.

Kansas City Current play in the Women’s National Football League, joining as an expansion team in 2021.

Mahomes is the first active NFL player to receive a stake on an NWSL team.

He joins an owner group that includes his wife Brittany Mahomes, Angie Long and Chris Long.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to join my wife on the Kansas City Current Owning Team,” said Patrick Mahomes. “Britany and Longhi have done an incredible job building a world class organization. I’m delighted to be joining another championship level club as they continue to make history.”

“We are so happy that this is a family business and Patrick has joined us as the owner,” said Brittany Mahomes. “He was a huge supporter behind the scenes. His passion for Current is undeniable and I’m excited to have him with us as we continue our journey to become the best in the NWSL.”

“Patrick is clearly a once-in-a-generation athlete who has had an immeasurable impact on the Kansas City community,” added Current co-owners Angie and Chris Long. “Working with Brittany has been a blessing. We are delighted that we are now collaborating with Patrick. The Mahomes are a really wonderful family.”

On July 28, 2020, Patrick Mahomes became part of the Kansas City Royals’ ownership group in Major League Baseball. On July 27, 2021, Patrick Mahomes became a co-owner of Sporting Kansas City in Major League Soccer.

Patrick Mahomes also helped start the Whataburger restaurant franchise in the Kansas City area.

Patrick Mahomes has also expressed a desire to have an NBA team in Kansas City.

Patrick Mahomes (14-3) and the Chiefs are top of the AFC going into the playoffs and will get a first-round bye and wait for their first opponent.
