Police say a man accused of shooting a Houston teacher has been found in Louisiana.

SUGAR LAND, TX (KIAH) — Louisiana police have arrested a man suspected of killing a Houston teacher over the weekend.

Sugar Land Police said Charvas Thompson of Houston was arrested in Shreveport, Louisiana by the Western District of Louisiana Violent Crime Task Force on Wednesday. They expect Thompson to be transferred to the Fort Bend County Jail in the future.

Thompson, 26, was wanted by police for the murder of Wendy Dewan, who was found shot to death in the backyard of her Sugar Land home on Saturday night. Duan, 28, was a third grade teacher at Boone Primary School in ISD Alief.

Police believe Thompson and Duane had been dating for about a week when the shooting took place. Witnesses told police that an altercation was the cause of the shooting, after which Thompson fled the scene.

SLPD detectives said they quickly identified Thompson after interviewing witnesses at the scene, viewing nearby video, and confirming his vehicle with license plate recognition cameras in the area.

Early Sunday morning, an arrest warrant was issued for Thompson, charging him with murder and setting his bail at $500,000.

Police said that while working with the Gulf Coast Violent Crime Task Force, they were able to locate Thompson in Shreveport.

The investigation is ongoing.
