AUSTIN (KXAN) — Red River Cultural District Free Week has returned to downtown Austin this week. The festival offers free concerts from Thursday, January 5th to Saturday, January 7th.
Safer Together put on a series of concerts each year to raise awareness of overdose deaths in Travis County. The series also helps local bands and venues at a time when they are usually inactive and leading to a downturn.
More than 100 bands perform at these 12 music venues:
- Cheer up Charlie
- Chess Club
- Elysium
- Empire control room and garage
- Flamingo Cantina
- Mala Vida
- Iroquois
- Bar Stubba-BQ
- Swan dive
- 13th floor
- Valhalla
- Vaquero Takero
Organizers say festival goers will receive discounts on food and drink at nearby venues, including:
- hoboken pie
- Stubbs Bar-BQ
- Vaquero Takero
- Shawarma Point
- Pelona
- Brewery of the Central District
According to organizers, Free Week started in 2003 at the original Emo’s on Sixth and Red River streets.
