The final: North Texas 64, Florida International 57
Where is the UNT: UNT improved to 15-4 on the season and 6-2 in Conference USA play after bouncing back from loss to Florida Atlantic by defeating FIU. Mean Green have won five of their last six games.
What now?: UNT will face Rice at home on Thursday before C-USA’s key showdown with UAB on Saturday in Birmingham, Alabama. The Blazers won the C-USA Tournament last season when UNT won the regular season title.
Star of the day: UNT had problems when they were eight points behind with just under eight minutes left. The sneaky greens rallied around Kai Huntsberry, who scored six in a row to put UNT back in the game. He finished with 13 points.
“I told them to stay the course, compete and find a way to win. We had to make stops.”
— Grant McCasland, UNT Coach on Ming Green’s victory over FIU.
Our opinion: UNT looked like he was in trouble late in the second half of the Panthers win. The Min Green lost 53–45 after Nick Guadarrama converted a 3-pointer.
From that point on, UNT dominated the game. Huntsberry’s six straight points took Mean Green to two points, 53–51.
UNT took the lead for good when Jayden Martinez made 3 assists from Tylor Perry. UNT continued to break away from this place and went to the end of the game that he needed to win to avoid a winless trip to Florida.
Huntsberry was just one of the UNT players who had a big night. Perry hit four triples and finished with 17 points, the UNT type of exit used to what his star player produces.
Martinez scored 13 points off the bench in a key game and Abu Usman was productive in the paint with 13 points and nine rebounds.
The win was exactly what UNT needed after a heavy loss to the FAU.
