Rosie Castro, civil rights activist and matriarch of the Castro family, is seeking the remaining term for outgoing San Antonio City Councilwoman Ana Sandoval.

Rosie Castrocivil rights activist and mother of former mayor Julián Castro and current congressman Joaquin Castro, announced she was interested in taking Sandoval’s seat on Wednesday, January 18.
In a statement, Sandoval said that “While the service has been satisfying, it is now time for me to turn my attention to personal matters, including my new family. Over the past year and a half, my personal responsibilities have grown, and now it’s time for me to make sure I’m giving them the attention they need.”
Sandoval said her last day on the council would be January 29. She said she would start a new job at University Health.
Hoping to fill the remainder of her term, Rosie said in a Facebook post that she would seek a council appointment. She noted that she did not intend to run in the May elections.
“If I am appointed in February, over the next few months, I will do my best to ensure that our community moves forward to a place where all neighborhoods can thrive and every individual can achieve their dreams,” Castro said. “…I love our city and want to help us not miss a single detail this spring.”
