Services are scheduled for Narramore, the Texas Whistler, and a famous photographer.

Two of Greenville’s most cherished holiday events will be slightly less musical following the death of James Narramore on Saturday. He was 88 years old.

Narramore, a longtime resident of Greenville’s Park Street, was known as the “Texas Whistler” as he treated horse-drawn cart riders during Park Street’s annual Christmas events and serenaded the public waiting for the Independence Day parade on Park Street and programs at Cavanaugh United Methodist Church with tunes from Christmas carols to patriotic classics.

His support for both programs and the Park Street Historical Association in general led to Narramore being named Grand Marshal for the 4 July 2021 parade.

Narramore was also a renowned local photographer, and the American Cotton Museum Audie Murphy recently partnered with Narramore to catalog the thousands of photographs he has taken over his nearly 70-year career.

Narramore, who graduated from East Texas State Teachers College (now Texas A&M University of Commerce) in 1954, worked as a photojournalist for the Greenville Evening Banner early in his career and later opened his own photography studio.

In an article published December 24, 2022 in the Herald-Banner, Narramore talked about his days at the Greenville Evening Banner, one of Greenville’s two daily newspapers. The other was the Greenville Morning Herald, which later merged into one.

“When I was there, there was fierce competition between the two local newspapers, so we were always in a hurry to get ahead of each other in stories and photos,” Narramore said. “In fact, I took the first color photo that appeared on the front page. It was a red apple on the teacher’s desk for the school edition.”

In 1961, James and his wife Grace opened Narramore Photographs. He later rose to the rank of President of the Texas Professional Photography Association.

Visitation will take place Tuesday evening at Lynch Funeral Home and funeral Wednesday morning at Park Street Baptist Church.
