Sheriff: Hays CISD student will die of fentanyl overdose in 2023

HAYS COUNTY, TX (KXAN) — The Hayes County Sheriff’s Department confirmed Sunday the first fentanyl overdose of the year: a Hayes Consolidated Independent School District student died of fentanyl poisoning on January 2.

“To kick off the new year, we already… we have a Hays CISD student who sadly passed away from fentanyl-related poisoning,” said Anthony Hipolito, Hays County Deputy Sheriff.

A Hays CISD spokesperson said the district offers counseling services after a student’s death. However, the press service did not confirm the cause of death.

HCSO and Hays CISD officials said fentanyl overdose is an ongoing crisis in the district after four students died from fentanyl poisoning in 2022. students who died from fentanyl.

The HCSO reported 37 cases of fentanyl overdose in 2022, 14 of which involved minors between the ages of 13 and 17.
