Shiffrin takes the lead again in the first run; could add to World Cup record

SAN VIGILIO DI MAREBBEMichaela Shiffrin held a big lead in the first run of the giant slalom on Wednesday and could quickly add to it record number of world championship wins 83 on the same track where she set the women’s mark the day before.

Shiffrin was 0.51 seconds ahead Olympic champion Sarah Hector and 0.65 ahead of former World Cup giant slalom champion Marta Bassino.

Only two other skiers, Ragnhild Mowinkel and Federica Brignone, were within a second of Shiffrin’s time at the Kronplatz resort in San Vigilio.

Shiffrin also took the lead in the first run on Tuesday when she overtook the previous record of 82 wins set by a former American teammate. Lindsey Vonn.

Shiffrin had a late night after her record breaking day.

“But it was a really good evening,” she said. “It was so good to see messages from people, such support and so much excitement about the race. I definitely looked at it all a lot and then tried to go to bed and get a good night’s sleep. And I woke up at midnight. I woke up at 3. Then I woke up at 5. I was hungry all night. I thought, “Oh my gosh, I’m in a mess.”

However, Shiffrin managed to pull himself together to show his best skiing again.

“Today is a beautiful hill again. The surface is amazing and it was a good run, a lot of action and dynamic skiing,” she said. “So I felt very good during the first run and am looking forward to another run on the hill.”

There was fog at the top of Erta’s steep run, but as the skiers descended, visibility improved.

Shiffrin is also fast approaching Ingemar Stenmark’s combined men’s and women’s total of 86 wins.

If Shiffrin wins a race on Wednesday and two slaloms in Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic this weekend, she could equal Stenmark on Sunday.
