Six people have died in a three-car collision on a Texas highway, authorities say.

GEORGE WEST, Texas (AP) — A minivan attempting to overtake a car in a restricted area on a Texas highway crashed head-on into an SUV, which was then hit by another vehicle, authorities said. Six people were killed and five more were injured.

The accident happened around 6:20 pm Friday near George West, about 60 miles (100 km) northwest of Corpus Christi, the sergeant said. Guadalupe Casares of the Texas Department of Public Safety.

“It was a pretty edgy scene,” Casares said.

The crash was still under investigation on Monday, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety. But the department said in a press release that a minivan traveling south on U.S. Route 59 attempted to pass through a restricted area and crashed into a northbound SUV. The sedan then crashed into the back of the SUV.

According to Casares, the car passing by was not injured.

The minibus driver, 39-year-old Xochitl Veronica Lopez of Houston, died at the scene along with an underage passenger in the minibus, the department said.

The driver of the SUV, Salvador Almeda Mendoza, 47, of Ganado, Texas, was also killed along with two passengers, Hilda Briones Nieves, 58, and Honorio Lazo Navarro, 74, both from Ganado.

The sixth fatality was a passenger in the sedan, whose name has not been released.

Five more people were taken to hospital with “non-disabling injuries,” the Public Safety Department said.

Authorities still don’t believe alcohol was the cause, Casares said.
