Sobolenko extends winning streak at the Australian Open

MELBOURNE – Arina Sobolenko maintained her unbeaten start to the year when she beat Teresa Martincova 6-1, 6-4 on Tuesday to advance to the second round of the Australian Open.

No. 5 Sobolenko, who won the Adelaide International title in the first week of the year, amassed 29 winners to her opponent’s seven, winning her fifth match in a row.

“It was not so easy, I am very happy to start with a victory,” said Sobolenko, who will play with American Shelby Rogers in the second round. “I have to work on my thinking, stay calm and not get too upset when I make mistakes. I really think that’s the only thing missing from my game.”

Sobolenko, who has yet to win a Grand Slam singles title, has not advanced past the fourth round of the Australian Open in five previous visits.
