The US Census Bureau recently released its latest American Community Survey, offering an updated picture of demographic and economic conditions in the United States. The typical American household earned an average of $69,021 in the five years ending 2021, according to new ACS estimates.
This latest figure represents a 6% increase over the five-year period ending in 2020. But while the 2021 ACS shows wage increases for most American households, it also highlights the significant income inequality in the United States, as there are parts of the country where incomes are much higher than average.
Southlake, Texas is one of the places where the median household income is more than double the national average. The typical household in the area earns $239,833 a year, the fourth highest of any city with sufficient data and 247.5% more than the national average.
Incomes in the United States for individuals and the general population tend to rise with higher levels of education. It is estimated that 73.0% of adults in Southlake have a bachelor’s degree or higher, far exceeding the proportion of adults with a similar level of education of 33.7% nationwide.
All data in this story are five-year 2021 ACS estimates. For the purposes of this history, cities are defined as incorporated legal entities or census-defined statistical areas with a population greater than 25,000 and may include communities bordering college or university campuses. Cities were excluded if the number of households for which income was determined was less than 1,000 in ACS 2021 or if the sampling error associated with place data was considered too high.
