Suspension expected after fight between Tyler and Texas High

Questions remain after the Tyler High vs. Texas High was stopped due to fighting in the first quarter on Friday at the Tiger Center in Texarkana.

Tyler ISD Athletic Director Greg Priest said he is working with Texarkana ISD, the District 15-5A Executive Committee and representatives from the University’s Interscholastic League to answer questions about the game. He also said that the competition would most likely not be replayed and there might be a double fine. In addition, he expects the players to be suspended.

The priest said questions could be answered on Tuesday.

Lions coach Justin Johnson said play was stopped with 5:30 left in the first quarter due to a mid-court brawl. He added that the fans took to the court.

The video shows the players attacking each other, and eventually the entire court is filled with players throwing punches and fans hanging around.

After about 15 seconds, it seems that calm is about to be restored, but the fight continues. It is unknown what caused the initial brawl.

The Lions entered the competition Friday 16-4 overall and 4-0 in District 15-5A. The Tigers were 2-9 and 1-3.

Both teams are scheduled to play on Tuesday, with the Lions visiting Longview and the Texas High hosting Hallsville in Texarkana.

Johnson expects players to be suspended from Tuesday and possibly Friday against Mount Pleasant in Tyler. The Tigers plan to visit Pine Tree on Friday.
