Teen stole Birmingham woman’s handbag, used her credit cards, arrested in Las Vegas, police say

 

BIRMINGHAM, Michigan. – A teenager was arrested in Las Vegas after he grabbed a woman from behind, stole her handbag and used her credit cards at several stores in Metro Detroit, police said.

The theft occurred at 6:26 p.m. on January 4 on Harmon Street off North Old Woodward Avenue in Birminghamaccording to the authorities.

Cartier Blake Rufus, 18, approached a 64-year-old woman who was walking west on the sidewalk, officials said. According to police, he ran up from behind and hugged her.

After a brief struggle, Rufus grabbed the woman’s bag and fled north, authorities said.

The weapon was not used and was not expected.

Rufus used the woman’s credit cards at several stores in nearby towns, officials said.

Birmingham Police investigated the incident and identified Rufus as the suspected thief. They learned that he traveled to Nevada.

Las Vegas police and the FBI helped to apprehend Rufus. Authorities say he will be extradited back to Michigan to face charges.

Rufus is charged with unarmed robbery and three counts of stealing/possessing a financial transaction device without authorization.
