Texas-based Abbott kicks off third semester promising safer schools

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas Gov. Greg Abbott vowed Tuesday to make classrooms safer, without mentioning Uvalde’s school shooting as he began a record-breaking third term in office, putting the Republican in line to remain a rising national figure.

His inaugural address outside the Texas Capitol did not include specific policy injunctions regarding the aftermath of the killing of 19 children and two Robb Elementary School teachers by an AR-15 rifleman. The May tragedy was exacerbated by a hesitant law enforcement response, an investigation into which is ongoing, leading to the resignation of several officers.

Abbott touched on mental health and assured of quick, though not definite, action as he began his ninth year in office. He rejected calls for tougher gun restrictions during his campaign, and it’s doubtful that the GOP-controlled legislature would raise the minimum age for buying AR-15 type rifles from 18 to 21, one of the biggest demands. from the loudest families in Uvalde.

“Parents need to know their kids are safe when they give them a lift every morning,” Abbott said.
