Texas kayaker found dead after missing off coast, officials say

The search for the missing Texas kayaker halted after officials found a body matching the man’s description on Sunday, January 22, according to the US Coast Guard. Barry Bahama, 49, was last seen on Friday, January 20, near Jamaica Beach, a town near Galveston.

According to the US Coast Guard, Baham was due to return from his 4:00 p.m. kayaking trip, but never returned. He was last seen rowing a white kayak north of Jamaica Beach. Officials shared a photo of his kayak on the US Coast Guard’s social media pages. A body matching his description was later found at 10:30 a.m. Sunday near West Bay.

Officials did not identify the kayaker as Bahama, but the Coast Guard said they had stopped looking for him.

“We are grateful for the support provided by other first responders, volunteers and community members who came to the rescue in the search,” the Coast Guard commander said. Michael P. Cortese, Search and Rescue Coordinator, Houston-Galveston Sector. “Our prayers are with loved ones as they go through this difficult time.”
