AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Texas Longhorns caught a top target on a transfer portal on Wednesday to bolster their defensive field.
Jalen Catalon, Southeastern Conference quarterback and 2020 U.S. Arkansas State freshman, has two years of eligibility left and enrolled in Texas for the spring semester, the school announced Wednesday.
Catalan only played one game for the Razorbacks last year before picking up an injury at the end of the season. He was a Preseason All-American in both 2021 and 2022 and was hampered by injuries on both occasions. He played six games in 2021, including a 40–21 victory over Texas when he had eight tackles and a pass break.
In 2020, as a redshirt freshman, he was a semi-finalist for the Jim Thorpe Award, given to the nation’s best defensive player. This is the only year he has played a full season in his collegiate career.
He joins the 2023 recruiting team along with Stanford’s transfer player Ryan Sanborn and Wake Forest’s Gavin Holmes.
Catalan is a Texas native from Mansfield who played at Legacy High School.
