A Waller County man is in jail on $500,000 bail after reportedly confessing to the murder and beheading of his 21-year-old wife. Officials said Anggie Diaz’s body was found at their home on Wednesday, Jan. 11, the Waller County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
Law enforcement was called after family members discovered Diaz’s mutilated body in the home she shared with her husband Jared Deekus, 21, at around 4:35 p.m. Their house was located behind the house of Deekus’ parents on a common plot.
“Part of the body was dismembered, and the house was covered in blood. It was a terrible scene at best,” Waller County Sheriff Troy Guidry said at a press conference. “The evidence shows [the murder weapon] there was a kitchen knife … everything happened on the premises, and all parts of the items were seized and presented as evidence.”
The sheriff said they cut off her head and left her body in the house.
The Deekus family, who had originally called the police, were detained at home and taken to law enforcement headquarters for questioning. Deakus remained at the scene and was eventually charged with murder. He remains in the Waller County Jail on $500,000 bail.
According to KHOU, Deekus was caught on CCTV around 11:40 a.m. on the day of the murder walking to Diaz’s place of work, getting a beer and leaving without paying. The video shows how he opens a beer in the parking lot, takes a sip, gets into the car and leaves.
Diaz’s friends told KHOU the 21-year-old was from Nicaragua and worked two jobs to try and pay for her mother’s cancer treatment at home.
The couple married in October 2022, according to Waller County Judge Trey Duhon, who posted on Facebook about the couple, for whom he performed a legal ceremony. Guidry said law enforcement had previously received calls from homes on the property, but did not specify whether they were linked to Deekus or Diaz, but noted that those calls “had nothing to do with that kind of effect or level of violence.”
The Diaz family plans to picket in the park near her Oak Hollow home and have launched GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses. At the time of writing, over $20,000 has been raised.
