WALLER COUNTY, Texas (AP) – On Friday, a 21-year-old Texas man remained in jail after authorities charged him with the murder and beheading of his wife.
Jared Deekus has been charged with the murder of 21-year-old Anggie Diaz.
Waller County Sheriff Troy Guidry said authorities discovered Diaz’s body Wednesday afternoon at the home the couple lived in a rural area near Magnolia, located about 44 miles (70 km) northwest of Houston.
“This is a terrible crime,” Guidry said.
According to Gidri, Deekus was found at the scene of the murder and arrested. The sheriff told reporters that Deakus later confessed to the murder. Investigators believe a kitchen knife was used in the murder.
The court records did not list a lawyer for Deekus who could act on his behalf.
Guidry said authorities are still trying to determine a motive.
Friends of Diaz told KHOU-TV that she was a Nicaraguan immigrant who worked two jobs to pay for her mother’s cancer treatment at home.
Waller County Judge Trey Duhon posted on Facebook that he married the couple in October.
“I am very saddened and shaken by the news of this tragic event, and I pray with all their families,” Duhon said.
