SAN MARCOS. Texas enrollment for 2023 continues to grow, with nine more signers announced this week, bringing the total to 21.
Coach HJ Kinn promised at his opening press conference last month to find recruits who were Texas high school graduates but originally signed up for out-of-state programs. Three of nine announcements this week, including Arkansas quarterback Malik Hornsby.
The former four-star prospect leaving Fort Bend Marshall in 2020 was the first transfer announcement this week on Monday. In 15 games as a reserve with the Razorbacks, he completed 18 of 39 passes for 314 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, rushing for 307 yards and scoring points. He has three years left to play.
More: New Texas State Coach G. J. Kinn’s staff will be very similar to his Incarnate Word staff.
He was one of three Power Five transfers signed this week, along with Oklahoma defenseman Joshua Eaton (originally from Houston) and Missouri defenseman Darius Jackson (Red Oak). They give the Bobcats five signed quarterbacks, along with Washington State transfer Caleb Ford-Dement, Navarro transfer Michael Boudin III and Mesquite Horn’s Amarion Atwood.
On Monday, four offensive linemen from Kinn’s previous school, Incarnate Word, were announced as Texas State Signers: Caleb Johnson, Emeka Obigbo, Himeto Obigbo and Dorion Staun. And Nash Jones signed on Dec. 21, making him five former Cardinals linemen who are now Bobcats. The State of Texas also signed one high school prospect, Bami Badusi of Mansfield Timberview.
Marshall linebacker Dan Foster Jr. and Southeast Louisiana guard Bryce Cage were the other two transfers this week, giving the Bobcats 17 transfers. Among them are seven FBS players, five of whom came from Power Five schools.
High school recruits must wait until designated signing periods to formally submit a letter of intent (the first day of signing was December 21st and the traditional signing day would be February 1st), while four-year college transfers may be signed and announced outside of these windows.
College coaches are not allowed to evaluate or personally contact recruits during the “dead period” from December 19 to January 12, but they can still communicate digitally. As the dead period ends this weekend, the state of Texas will be accepting new recruits every weekend leading up to contract signing day.
The Bobcats have two other players signed but not signed: South Oak Cliff defenseman Taylor Starling and Kilgore linebacker Derrick Morning Jr.
Basketball: The men’s team won three games in a row, improving to 10-8 and 3-2 in the Sun Belt, and the women’s 11-5 and also 3-2. The women defeated Appalachia at home on Jan. 5, lost to Louisiana at home on Jan. 7, and defeated Georgia State 64-48 on Thursday.
