The man was arrested after fatally hitting a pedestrian on an East Side street and fleeing the scene, police said.

SAN ANTONIO – A man was arrested on the East Side last week after he hit a pedestrian and fled the scene.

San Antonio police said Alvin Charles Bates, 43, was hit. John Abraham Ortega25 until 7 a.m. Wednesday at the 200 S. WW White Road block, south of Interstate 10.

The arrest warrant statement says Bates was driving a silver 2011 Dodge Durango northbound on WW White at the time.

Ortega was crossing the road when the Durango hit him, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to police, Bates drove left into the parking lot, but then pulled out of the parking lot and drove north on WW White.

Surveillance video shows that the car hit the victim, drove into the parking lot, and then fled. The footage also shows the Durango’s passenger headlight not working.

Police said the car parts left at the scene belonged to a 2011-2019 Dodge Durango.

On Monday, the man called the police to report Bates, who was one of his employees in his business.

The man said the manager said they saw blood on Durango Bates on Wednesday after he arrived at work, the affidavit says. When the manager asked Bates about the blood, Bates said it was paint transfer from an accident.

The affidavit states that at some point during the day, an unknown person took the Durango and the car was never seen again.

Police arrested Bates on warrants on Monday at his work.

When asked about the crash, he initially said he knew nothing about the case, but later admitted to hitting Ortega, police said.

Bates said “it was an accident and he didn’t mean to hit the man,” the affidavit says. He also said that he left the scene because he was afraid.

He “refused to tell” police what happened to Durango, investigators said.

Bates was charged with failing to stop and provide assistance, resulting in death, a felony in the second degree. His bail is set at $60,000.
