The NSA, playfully known as “No Such Agency,” wants to expand its staff in San Antonio.

Did you know that the National Security Agency has over 3,000 employees at the San Antonio intelligence gathering site? If you haven’t, it’s probably because the agency is notoriously quiet about its operations, including in Texas.

But this is starting to change. As the country faces a growing number of cyber threats, the National Security Agency is recruiting to keep up. Including in San Antonio, where the Texas NSA emerges from the shadows.

Eric Killelea, who covers technology and cybersecurity for the San Antonio Express-News, said the agency has had a presence in San Antonio at an old Sony factory on the city’s west side for more than a decade. According to him, there is a cryptology center and three other buildings on the territory.

“The San Antonio site is one of four cryptology centers in the US. And what they are doing there in the center is, roughly speaking, intelligence and cyber operations,” he said. “As you can imagine, they are pretty tight-lipped about it. So we don’t have much information.”

Killelea said San Antonio, with its large military presence, is a logical place for NSA operations.

City leaders say the city has the largest number of U.S. cybersecurity officers outside of Washington, D.C.,” he said. “The NSA is telling us that being here is a geographic advantage. And they’re looking for partnerships with federal agencies, the private sector, scientists, and they’re kind of using their presence in San Antonio to tap into that potential workforce.”

It’s not clear how many NSA employees he wants to hire in Texas, but Killelea said he will continue to monitor the agency’s activities.

“San Antonio is trying to market itself or a brand of sorts as a US cyber city and is trying to attract new companies and new businesses and pump up the workforce,” he said. “Here is another agency that is looking for employees. So more workers and more jobs.”
