The Rams Boys are back to beat Cape Fear


January 25 – PEMBROOK. Purnella Swett’s boys’ basketball team played home in the fourth quarter to clinch a 64-59 home win in the United 8 Conference over Cape Fear on Tuesday.

Cape Fear (10-7, 6-4 United-8) edged out Purnell Swett (8-10, 6-3 United-8) 48-40 to move into fourth place before the Rams bested the Colts 24-11 in the final period.

Cape Fear led 16-11 after the first quarter and 34-27 at halftime.

Connor Harris edged out Purnella Swett by 20 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter. Marcus Lowry scored 15 points and Adarius Grisset scored 11 for the Rams.

Jeremiah Melvin led the Colts with 20 points, Connor Moore with 14 and Masown Bryant with 10.

The Rams, who are currently third in United 8, will play Jack Britt on Friday.

Angel, the Colts dominate the Lady Rams

The Purnell Swett girls’ basketball team suffered their first conference loss since February 17, 2021 on Tuesday when they visited Cape Fear and won 77-34 in Pembroke.

Pernell Swett (16-3, 8-1 United-8) trailed Cape Fear (13-4, 8-1 United-8) 30-8 after the first quarter, 47-15 at halftime and 60-29 at the end of the third.

Purnell senior point guard Swett Kylie Chavis was not out due to a knee injury. Nyla Mitchell scored 17 points and Natalie Evington scored 11 for the Rams.

Jayda Angel of Cape Fear single-handedly edged the Rams with 35 points. Kaia Starling scored 14 points and Teralyn Harris scored 12.

Cape Fear takes first place with the Rams in the United-8 standings. This season saw the teams split in two after the Rams’ 66–65 victory in Fayetteville on December 5.

Pirates defeat Jack Britt

The Lumberton boys’ basketball team won 58-51 over conference rival Jack Britt at home on Tuesday.

JB Brockington scored 18 points on 10 rebounds and 8 assists to lead Lumberton (16-2, 8-1 United-8). Kobe Oxendine had nine points, Jayden Shepard had eight points, 10 rebounds and four assists, and Tre Lewis had seven points on 15 rebounds.

Lumberton hosts Pine Forest in a non-conference match on Wednesday before welcoming United 8 rivals South View on Friday.
