“The sky is not the limit” | Fellow thanks Houston Frontiers Club for help

Ashton Parker followed in the footsteps of his sister Trinity Parker, who received a scholarship in 2018.

HOUSTON — Meet Ashton Parker, one of over 1,000 students who have received the Greater Houston Frontiers Club (GHFC) MLK Memorial Scholarship.

Parker, who attended Westfield High School, applied for a scholarship in the fall of 2021.

Now 19, he is a sophomore at Southern University A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He studies computer science and wants to become a software engineer.

He remembers when he found out he got a scholarship.

“I was very excited. We were actually sitting at a choir rehearsal at the church,” Parker said. “I was just overwhelmed with joy. I looked at my mom and said, “Look, I got a scholarship.” She was happy too.”

This is a moment he will never forget.

Parker is the youngest of five siblings, most of whom went on to college. Parker said his parents, Katherine and Terence, encouraged him to seek scholarships to teach him financial responsibility. Now he sees the scholarship as a chance to achieve what he wants in life without having such a heavy financial burden.

“(The scholarship) not only gave me the opportunity to go to Southern University without worrying about debt in computer science, but also gave me the opportunity to connect with colleagues who may have lifelong connections,” he said.

The Parkers are no strangers to the MLK Memorial Scholarship. In 2018, Parker’s older sister, Trinity Parker, received financial aid. This investment touched the Parker family.

“This scholarship encouraged me to continue my studies in college,” said Ashton Parker. “The sky is not the limit. It’s even further.”
