The Texas Testicle Festival begins Saturday, January 14 from noon to 4:00 pm and is hosted by local ranchers and farmers at the Bankersmith Saloon in Fredericksburg.
“We’ve been hosting this testicle party for four years now and it’s always a celebration,” Texas Testicle Festival founder and lead organizer Greg Ball said in an email to MySA.
Ranchers and farmers often castrate cattle, and not wanting all the excess meat to go to waste, the delicacy was inevitably born along with the Texas Testicle Festival. Prior to COVID-19, the event used to bring about 200 guests to sample the fried delicacies. The festival is also held when they have the most testicles, so it doesn’t always happen on the same day.
“Guests love the opportunity to feast on eggs, listen to local artists and wash their eggs down with cocktails or beer. This is a special day that pays tribute to our rich pastoral heritage,” Ball said. “One year we passed 2,000 balls in four hours. Since COVID-19, we have had fewer guests, but we expect a larger turnout this year.”
In addition to a plate of fried eggs, guests can snack on other food at the event, such as hamburgers or pork sandwiches, as well as drink ice-cold beer while enjoying live local musicians.
Ball also gave advice to those who are eating balls for the first time: “Try not to choke. They are chewy. And get high before you try them for the first time. what you eat. Just breathe.”
