Tornado damage in the Houston area led to the closure of major roads

Severe weather damage Tuesday resulted in the closure of several major roads in the southeast Houston area.

The Pasadena Police Department announced in a Facebook post Wednesday morning that several roads in and around the city will be “temporarily closed…due to severe tornado damage.”

According to the Pasadena Police, the following roads will be closed for now:

  • Fairmont Parkway on Mickey Gilly Boulevard.
  • Vista Road at Mickey Gilly Boulevard.
  • 5150 Burke Road (animal shelter).
  • Iroquois Drive / Ponca Street
  • Spencer Highway from Space Center Boulevard to Lilac Street, including junction with Beltway 8.

“We are asking the public to avoid these locations to allow immediate access to emergency responders and utilities,” Pasadena police added in a post that also includes a list of the many broken traffic lights in the area.

The closure follows the first-ever tornado emergency released in the southeast region of Houston: Tuesday’s storms unleashed a tornado that tore through Pasadena, Deer Park and Baytown, causing extensive structural damage to businesses and homes and forcing dozens of people to sleep in shelters on Tuesday evening.

The storm also caused widespread and persistent power outages across the region, with downed power lines and damaged power lines, leaving thousands of people in the dark on Wednesday morning.

More than 218,000 CenterPoint Energy customers alone have been affected by outages in the last 24 hours, with nearly 22,000 still without power as of Wednesday morning around 10:30. another thousand in Deer Park and Baytown.
