GEORGETOWN, TX (KXAN) — A section of I-35 will close overnight for the next two weekends while the bridge is demolished.
The Texas Department of Transportation said it would close the north and south lanes of I-35 between Lakeway Drive and SH 29 to night traffic to demolish and remove the northern section of the Williams Drive bridge.
Closing will take place on Friday and Saturday evenings, over two weekends, from 21:00 to 09:00, weather permitting. Traffic will be hindered from 20 to 21 January and from 27 to 28 January.
Northbound I-35 traffic will bypass the front road at the 262 Williams Drive exit and rejoin the main lanes north of Northwest Boulevard.
Southbound I-35 traffic will use the Williams Drive exit (262) and re-enter the main lanes north of SH 29.
The Williams Drive bridge will also be closed during the demolition. Eastbound traffic will bypass I-35 south front and use the SH 29 U-turn to access Williams Drive.
Westbound traffic will bypass I-35 north front and turn left at the signaled intersection onto Lakeway Drive to merge onto Williams Drive. Once opened, the Williams Drive bridge will have two lanes in each direction.
In preparation for the bridge’s demolition, dedicated turn lanes on the Williams Drive bridge will be removed Wednesday night. The bridge will maintain two lanes of traffic in each direction throughout construction.
The bypass map is attached below.
Road signs will be installed to warn drivers of the impending closure. TxDOT asked travelers to be patient and remain vigilant when traveling through the work area.
