Tree planted in North Las Vegas in honor of plane crash victims

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — A vigilant passenger can help prevent road deaths.

An important message during National Passenger Safety Week, which runs from January 22 to 29.

Tina Lavoie told 8 News Now about her daughter Hillary, who was riding in the passenger seat when her friend lost control of the car, causing them to crash.

“If she hadn’t been sleeping, would she have told her friend to slow down, would she have made sure her friend wasn’t on the phone or texting?” Lavoie shared.

Hillary died on impact, she was 18 at the time of the crash.

“As a passenger, as a driver, you have to be safe in your car and pay attention to your surroundings,” she added.

Since it’s National Passenger Safety Week, those who have been hit the hardest want to spread the word about the importance of being present and alert when you’re in a car with someone.

Candice Lightner, founder of We Save Lives and Mothers Against Drunk Driving, teamed up with the National Highway Traffic Safety Foundation to create the week.

“We need to spread the word that passengers have power,” Lightner said. “They can save lives. They can save their lives and all the people on the roads.”

In the latest state deaths report from the Department of Public Safety, Clark County reported 246 deaths in 2022, up about 4.2% from the previous year in 2021.
