UNT takes over from Shadow Creek quarterback Brian Nelson

North Texas continued late to assemble their first signing class under new coach Eric Morris on Tuesday morning when Mean Green took over from Shadow Creek quarterback Brian Nelson.

Nelson announced his decision on his Twitter account.

“DENTON, TX… I’M COMING,” Nelson wrote.

Nelson is a highly sought after player who has several offers from the Football Bowl Subdivision programs. He preferred the UNT to Texas, Coastal Carolina, Miami (Ohio), New Mexico, New Mexico State, and Akron, among others.

The 6-foot, 181-pound high schooler was the college’s top prospect last season when he intercepted six passes and was named to the All-District 23-6A First Team.

Nelson made several key plays for Shadow Creek last season, including returning one of his six interceptions for 28 yards for a touchdown in a victory over Bridgeland.

UNT offered Nelson a scholarship on 3 January.

The Angry Greens are transitioning to a 3-3-5 defense under new coordinator Matt Caponi and have loaded defensive backs into their 2023 recruiting class.

UNT previously landed transfer safety Phillip Hill (UNLV) and Damon Youngblood (Louisiana-Lafayette). Earlier this week, The Mean Green took on Evan Jackson from Houston North Shore Security.

UNT accepted several prospectuses over the weekend and is on the verge of a national signing day on February 1st.
