EDINBURGH, TX (ValleyCentral) — The UTRGV chess team is back in the Final Four.
On January 5-8, the team participated in the 2023 Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship.
UTRGV competed against 44 universities and earned a place in the Final Four. Both teams finished in the top four, with Team A in third and Team B in fourth.
Webster University ranked first, followed by the University of Missouri, UTRGV, and St. Louis University. Due to rules against two teams from the same university playing against each other, UTRGV had to choose one team to represent the school. Team A will represent UTRGV in the Final Four.
“We qualified four times,” said chess coach Bartek Macieja. “We’re the only team from South Texas and it’s harder for us to get to the Final Four than it is to win it. I hope that will be true for us this year.”
Kamil Dragun, a UTRGV graduate student from Poland, is the most experienced player on the team. Dragoon is a key player of the team, he has three victories in the President’s Cup.
“It’s not easy to qualify,” Dragoon said. “A year ago we played very well, but it was not enough for qualifying. But this time everything was under our control.”
The team will continue preparations for the Final Four or the President’s Cup, which will take place in April.
