“Modern”, as the locals call it, contrasts beautifully with the nearby Kimbell Art Museum. Ando was influenced by the use of natural light in Kimbell’s construction and wanted to emphasize the light of the ever-present Texas sun in his design.
The museum stands partly over a large pond for two main reasons. The water further reflects light into the building’s floor-to-ceiling windows and acts as a barrier to some of the sounds coming from the nearby highway.
Thousands of modern art pieces that make up the museum’s collection are in a place that is a work of art in itself.
KERA Video from the series “The Look of Texas”. explores how our built environment preserves our history, reflects our diverse cultures, and projects our ambitions for the future. From the gleaming, vulgar House of Beer in Houston to the towering Museum of Modern Art in Fort Worth, architecture helps tell the story of who we are in Texas.
