One person was killed in a shooting outside a Whataburger restaurant in North Texas, according to the Fort Worth Police Department. Family members identified the victim as Zakharia Trevino, 17. WFAA-TV reported that Trevino was the cook at the Whataburger he was shot at and was going to be a father in a few months.
The shooting took place just after 4:00 pm on Friday, January 20, in the parking lot of the Whataburger restaurant, which is opposite Pascal High School, the same school that Trevino attended. According to the WFAA, he was a junior. Police said at a conference on Friday that they believe the shooting started after an altercation escalated into a fight.
Erica Trevino, his mother, told the WFAA that her son died trying to protect his teenage cousin, who was critically injured in the shooting. She was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
“He was caring. He loved … He did exactly what we taught him, that is, to protect, ”said his mother. “His life was not just taken because of selfish acts. He changed all that by standing up for what he believed in, defending.”
On Monday, January 23, NBC-DFW reported that two people are in custody and police are looking for a third in connection with the fatal shooting. The officers arrested a minor, whose name was not released, and 17-year-old Daniel Reed. According to police, the suspects in the shooting are not current students at Pascal High School.
Reed is charged with murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
