How does exercising outdoors in winter help increase endurance?

There have been studies that have examined the effectiveness of exercise and cardiac output versus how much energy you have to expend to do what you need to do and believe it or not. And it’s actually a more efficient process. The steeper you get to the point.

But the study was mostly done on skiers, and it showed that somewhere between 32 and 34 degrees Fahrenheit, the body is at its most efficient.

This is likely because colder weather encourages your body to turn white fat into brown fat, and brown fat can be burned for calories. White fat doesn’t really do that.

So exercising in the winter will really help you get rid of the fat around your belly and thighs.

Doesn’t this work in the summer?

At warmer temperatures, your body has no incentive to convert these types of fat in the winter.

Winter outdoor exercise can also be good for metabolism?

A similar concept to endurance, meaning your body is more efficient in cold weather. And so any kind of exercise helps increase your metabolism.

When people go into hibernation during the winter, it usually slows things down. And that’s why people put on weight this winter. You know, part of that is the holidays and good food and you socializing and all that. But on the other hand, the natural impulse of people in winter is to be less active. So when you’re less active, your body tends to slow down your metabolism and hold on to those calories.

If you can combat this by going out and being active, then your metabolic rate stays high enough that you are still turning things around.

You are an orthopedist. Do you have questions about this with your patients?

Many of them have questions about how the weather will affect their joints. My answer to this in orthopedics, we say movement is the lotion for stiff joints because your cartilage cells need joint fluid to circulate around those joints for their metabolism. They do not have blood vessels that supply them with nutrients and take away all metabolic costs.

So the joint fluid does it. And if you move, you get fresh, healthy joint fluid from these cartilage cells, which will help prevent the stiffness from arthritis that would otherwise occur.

However, cold weather is often used as an excuse for not exercising. And you basically say it’s bad?

This is bad. Not only does this help with performance and weight issues, but it also helps your mental state.

You know, there’s such a thing as seasonal affective disorder, and it’s real and legal. The best way to combat this is to get outside, be active and move.

You get endorphins from exercise, and those endorphins can help lift your mood to get you out of that depressive state. And so for many people it is probably more important to do it in winter than in summer.

However, is there a temperature at which winter walks in the fresh air are not a good idea?

There is. You must use your common sense.

If it’s minus ten, then you’re in shorts and a T-shirt and at risk of frostbite. So, when you’re exercising outside and it’s cold:

  • Dress in layers so that when you start to warm up, you can sort of shed a few layers.
  • Make sure your hands, nose, and ears are covered, and wear good socks and shoes.

These are the parts of your body that are most susceptible to things like frostbite.
