Youth basketball brawl in Universal City leads to beatings, police called

UNIVERSAL CITY, Texas – Universal City police are investigating an attack that took place during a youth basketball game on Sunday.

Witnesses told police they saw “all the parents run out onto the court and fight each other,” according to the police report. No charges were brought.

The video shows that the fight began after a member of the other team hit one player.

David George said he was there – he’s a league-connected coach and parent. He added that he was concerned about the message that the actions of youth and adults are sending to the players.

“Yes, parents want their children to win. There will be a winner. There will be a loser. But as much as you want your kids to win, you have to teach them to lose,” he said.

He is trying to teach young people to make informed decisions because he knows that some of those decisions will have consequences outside of court.

“If you are going to win, win with respect. If you’re going to lose, lose with respect,” he said.

Full Court Athletics, the participating league, said it is discussing the implications for members. They said that they have four adults on the court to intervene in any situation.
