The Diocese of Covington condemns the taunts of Native American Nathan Phillips by MAGA hat-wearing white high school students at the Indigenous Peoples March in Washington D.C. on January 18.

Diocese of Covington: “We condemn the actions of the Covington Catholic High School students towards Nathan Phillips specifically, and Native Americans in general.”

“The matter is being investigated and we will take appropriate action, up to and including expulsion. We know this incident also has tainted the entire witness of the March for Life and express our most sincere apologies to all those who attended the March and all those who support the pro-life movement,” the statement reads.

The students were chanting “build the wall.” Let that sink in…they were chanting “build the wall” to a man whose ancestors were in this country way before theirs. It was never about the wall but the racist mindset that America belongs to whites and everybody else are intruders.

CNN’s Sara Sidner says there is footage that shows another side to this story:

“You are now hearing the other side of this story,” Sidner said. “You’re hearing from the student who has been at the center of all of this, saying from his perspective, he was the one being calm and he was the one that was getting the aggressive threats. Of course, you also heard from the Native American elder who said he was actually trying to calm the situation down, too. The people who seemed to have started all of this are the ones making racist threats and screaming at these kids and those were the Hebrew Israelites.”

Nick Sandmann, the student who was seen staring down Phillips with a smirk on his face, issued a statement saying that it was the military veteran who got in his face. CNN’s Jake Tapper posted his letter on Twitter.
