FALLEN LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER: Springfield (MA) Police Officer Kevin Ambrose was shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call Monday afternoon at the Lawton Arms Apartments. The shooter also killed a female, identified as either his girlfriend or his wife, at the scene before committing suicide. Some reports say the woman is clinging to life, while Officer Down Memorial says she died.
Officer Ambrose served with the Springfield Police Department for 36 years. He is survived by a wife, two children and one grandchild.
UPDATE#1 (06/04/12): Officer Kevin Ambrose was fatally shot by Rikers Island corrections officer Shawn Bryan while he was being served with a restraining order issued to ex-girlfriend Charlene Mitchell, the mother of his one-year old daughter. Officer Ambrose was greeted by the Ms. Mitchell near 90 Lawton Street. Also present was Mr. Shawn Bryan. After a brief conversation with Officer Ambrose all three subjects proceeded to apartment #5 on the third floor at 90 Lawton Street. Once outside the door of the apartment Shawn Bryan shoved his girlfriend into the apartment and closed the door with him inside leaving the officer in the hallway.
Officer Kevin Ambrose attempted to get inside the apartment door by shoving the door and pushing to gain entrance. Shawn Bryan then shot Officer Ambrose through the door striking him once. Mr. Bryan then opened the door and shot the officer again. Bryan then went back in to the apartment and shot Ms. Mitchell.
Bryan then left the third floor, proceeded to his personal vehicle. Bryan entered the vehicle and shot himself in the chest. Other Officers arrived in scene and discovered Officer Ambrose in the hallway suffering from gun shot wounds. These officers performed CPR and first aid on the officer. The officers also discovered Ms. Mitchell inside the apartment suffering from a gunshot wound. Both were transported by ambulance to the Baystate ER.
Officer Ambrose was pronounced dead at the ER. Ms. Mitchell was rushed to surgery and is in critical condition at this time. Officer on scene combed the area and discovered Mr. Bryan inside his vehicle. The officers discovered Bryan suffering from an apparent self inflicted gunshot wound. The handgun was recovered inside the vehicle. Officers performed CPR and firct aid on Mr. Bryan. He was also rushed to the Baystate ER where he was pronounced dead at the Emergency Room.
