Box Office Preview: ‘Bourne Legacy’ Expected to Knock ‘Dark Knight Rises’ from No. 1 Spot at Weekend Box Office

The weekend box office has some great movies that are expected to do well, but they are going up against the Olympics and the closing ceremony, which could be very interesting. Spy action flick The Bourne Legacy opens at the box office five years after the last installment and is expected to knock The Dark Knight Rises from its No. 1 spot, after its three week reign in the top spot.

Bourne Legacy, featuring Jeremy Renner as the new Aaron Cross, should debut in the $40 million range for the weekend. The Bourne Ultimatum debuted to $69.3 million in August 2007, while sequel The Bourne Supremacy opened to $52.3 million in 2004. The Bourne Identity debuted to $27.1 million in 2002. The Bourne Legacy also features other newcomers Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton, with returning actors including Albert FinneyJoan Allen and David Srathairn.

Also opening Friday is Jay Roach’s R-rated poltical comedy The Campaign and David Frankel’s dramedy Hope Springs, starring Meryl Streep, Tommy Lee Jones and Steve Carrell. The Campaign, starring Will Ferrell and Zack Galifianakis, is incredibly raunchy and features two candidates vying to represent their North Carolina district on Capitol Hill. The timing is interesting, since we are a presidential election year.
