When a white candidate has problems with the white Southern vote, then he’s knee-deep in a lot of crap. According to Reuters, many white Southerners are troubled by Mitt Romney’s wealth and his religion. Many feel that he doesn’t understand the needs of working class whites, as evidenced from the $10,000 bet he threw out at Texas Gov. Rick Perry during a presidential debate, and from his bragging that his wife, Ann Romney, has a couple of Cadillacs.
White lower- and middle-income voters such as [Sheryl] Harris are wild cards in this vituperative presidential campaign. With only a sliver of the electorate in play nationwide, they could be a deciding factor in two southern swing states, Virginia and North Carolina.
Reuters/Ipsos polling data compiled over the past several months shows that, across the Bible Belt, 38 percent of these voters said they would be less likely to vote for a candidate who is “very wealthy” than one who isn’t. This is well above the 20 percent who said they would be less likely to vote for an African-American. Source: Reuters
They also view his religion as a cult. These are the same people who didn’t vote for Barack Obama in 2008 because they thought he was a Muslim and probably because he is black, but guess what, many will be voting for him come November 6.
