Petraeus Affair Scandal: Marine Gen. John Allen Exchanged “Potentially Inappropriate” Emails with Jill Kelley

More drama in the CIA Director David Petraeus extramarital affair with Paula Broadwell scandal, enter Marine Gen. John Allen:

Politico:  “Marine Gen. John R. Allen, the four-star U.S. commander of the war in Afghanistan, exchanged thousands of “potentially inappropriate” emails with Jill Kelley, the Tampa woman who claimed to have been harassed by the ex-mistress of former CIA Director David Petraeus, a senior defense official told POLITICO. Allen, 58 and married, was nominated in October by President Barack Obama to be Supreme Allied Commander Europe and commander of the U.S. European Command.  That nomination is now on hold, but Allen will remain commander of U.S. forces and the NATO International Security Assistance Forces (ISAF) in Afghanistan, the official said. The FBI on Sunday turned over to Pentagon lawyers 20,000 to 30,000 pages of emails exchanged by the two from 2010 to 2012.”

I am not sure how the string of emails between General John Allen and the extramarital affair between David Petraeus and Paula Broadwell are connected. In short, this is a disgrace that two of the military’s highest ranking officials could behave in this manner. The continued dumbing-down of America.

Statement from the Secretary of Defense:

Statement by the Secretary of Defense on General John Allen

On Sunday, the Federal Bureau of Investigation referred to the Department of Defense a matter involving General John Allen, Commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan.

Today, I directed that the matter be referred to the Inspector General of the Department of Defense for investigation, and it is now in the hands of the Inspector General.   I have informed the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. The House Armed Services Committee has also been notified.

While the matter is under investigation and before the facts are determined, General Allen will remain Commander of ISAF.  His leadership has been instrumental in achieving the significant progress that ISAF, working alongside our Afghan partners, has made in bringing greater security to the Afghan people and in ensuring that Afghanistan never again becomes a safe haven for terrorists.  He is entitled to due process in this matter.

In the meantime, I have asked the President – and the President has agreed – to put his nomination on hold until the relevant facts are determined. I have asked both Senators Levin and McCain that the confirmation hearing on General Allen’s pending nomination to be Commander of United States European Command and Supreme Allied Commander, Europe be delayed.

The President has nominated General Joseph Dunford, Assistant Commandant of the Marine Corps, to succeed General Allen at ISAF.  I respectfully requested that the Senate act promptly on that nomination.

You ask why the Kelley/Miller emails are relevant to the Petraeous inquiry. They’re related because Gen. Miller was a recipient himself of emails from the same anonymous email account, which emails specifically named Gen. Petraeus and Mrs. Kelley. So he naturally called Mrs. Kelley and asked what was happening, thus linking up both email trails.

oops – I meant General Allen, not Miller in previous post.
