Here’s a Republican, Rep. Tom Cole (OK), who realizes that they don’t have the advantage in the tax fight with President Obama. During a private session he urged colleagues “to vote to extend the Bush tax rates for all but the highest earners before the end of the year — and to battle over the rest later,” Politico reports.
As it stands right now, President Obama and the Democrats can make the case that the Republicans are holding up tax cuts for the working class Americans at the expense of the rich. That argument led to Mitt Romney’s shellacking in the presidential election.
Cole said: “I think we ought to take the 98 percent deal right now. It doesn’t mean I agree with raising the top 2. I don’t.”
