President Obama shook the hand of South Korean “sensation” Psy at a White House charity event and the right wing goes nuts. Why? Psy, whose real name is Park Jae-Sang, sang about wanting to kill American soldiers in 2004, and his apology has fallen on deaf ears. The headline on the Breitbart article, “Obama, Biden Cozy Up to Anti-American Rapper Psy,” is laughable at best. Um, gee, how do they explain the vitriol spewed by rocker Ted Nugent? It’s okay for him to insult the majority of Americans in the name of conservatism. Never mind the fact that singing legend Diana Ross was also snapped in the same photograph with Vice President Joe Biden and the South Korean rapper.
Never mind the fact that Psy owes his popularity to millions of Americans who have watched his “Gangnam Style” video on YouTube. He has apologized for his anti-American protest song he sang that included the lines, ‘‘kill those f****** Yankees who have been torturing Iraqi captives…kill them all slowly and painfully.’ The majority of Americans respect our soldiers and don’t want to see any harm come to them, but the war in Iraq has been a sore point for many, including Americans. Advocating violence against our men and women in uniform is wrong but how about taking him at his word for his apology and moving on? We listen to some U.S. rappers and rockers denigrate women everyday in their songs and the outrage is virtually nonexistent. Never mind the fact that Diana Ross was among the performers as well.
What’s equally disturbing are some of the comments left on Breitbart by some of their visitors. They are in the same vein as the ugly lyrics uttered by Psy in 2004. You can’t have it both ways.
