SHOCK:  Hadiya Pendleton, 15, a honors student at King College Prep, who performed at President Obama’s inaugural events in Washington D.C. last week was fatally shot in a Chicago park.

Hadiya Pendleton had been released from school early Tuesday after an exam and was huddling under a canopy in a South Side park to escape the rain when she was shot in the back. Police said Hadiya Pendleton and another teen collapsed a block away in front of upscale homes on Oakenwalk Avenue.

There were reports that gang members were at the park but that Hadiya Pendleton was not a gang member. It seems that this promising young lady was an ‘unintended target’ when the gunman ran into the park and opened fire at 2:20 p.m., and then sped away in a waiting car, police say.

This is another senseless murder that occurred near President Obama’s Chicago home. You will recall Rashad Pratt was gunned down not far from the home. The Chicago Tribune reports, Hadiya Pendleton was a sophomore at King’s and had attended the inauguration where she performed at inaugural events with the school band and the Majorettes dance team.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Hadiya Pendleton. She was taken too soon. It’s time to take back out streets from thugs and gun violence.
